Hard Drive Failure.... Dead Disk... ARGH!!!

Last night I ran a defrag on my hard drives and got up this morning to find one drive was missing in Windows... ARGH!

I can't seem to get my PC to recognise it at all and this drive contains all my docs (photos etc), music projects and over 100Gb of mp3s! Luckily my docs and music projects were backed up a few weeks ago, but I've still lost some stuff. Not to mention my mp3 collection which was built up over the last few years and includes some rare stuff that will be nearly impossible to replace :( ...

There's loads of info on hard drive recovery on the web, Here's a couple of good articles I found:

Beginners Guides: Hard Drive Data Recovery

Data Recovery Myths

Firstly, I'm going to try putting it in a USB case to see if it will detect it so I can run some recovery tools (I'll try PC Inspector File Recovery first - it seems pretty good, and it's freeware).

If that doesn't work it's going in the freezer tonight!! The general opinion here is that it might work...

I'll update this as I go....

Finger's, toes and everything else crossed!!

UPDATE: After letting it cool down (it was pretty hot), I connected it via USB and Windows has picked it up... some files won't copy, but think I've saved most of the important stuff. I'll look into whether it was the IDE interface, heat or something else later... for now I'm going to try to get my mp3s copied!
